We are pleased to announce the next gathering of the Dar al Taqwa, at which we shall explore Friendship in the Square: Muslim Activism in Historic London, 1880s to the 1940s, by M. A. Sherif.
This remarkable work brings to light a lesser-known chapter in the history of Muslims in Britain. Through the lives of individuals and communities in London from the late eighteenth century to the 1940s, it traces the friendships, associations and endeavours through which Muslims sought to preserve their faith, cultivate fellowship and contribute to the wider society in which they lived.
For us in London today, these accounts offer more than a glimpse into the past. They invite us to consider the lives of those who came before us, the communities they established, the relationships they cultivated and the legacy they have left behind.
As we read, we shall reflect upon questions of faith, belonging, friendship and community, and consider what the experiences of earlier generations may teach us about our own place in Britain.
